Sig Sauer's classic P-series pistols look alike, but their grips are not all the same size. Order the wrong set and the panels simply won't line up with the frame. This guide explains which grips fit the P226, P229 and P228, what changes on E2, Legion and Carry models, and how to tell exactly which frame you have before you order.
Quick answer
- P229 and P228 share the same grips. A set made for the P229 fits the P228, and the reverse is also true.
- P226 grips are longer. The P226 has a full-size grip frame, so P226 grips do not fit the P229 or P228, and P229 grips do not fit the P226.
- DA/SA and DAK triggers use the same grips on the same frame size.
- P220 is a different pistol. It is a single-stack .45 with its own grips.

Why P226 grips don't fit the P229
The P226 is Sig's full-size service pistol. Its grip frame is taller to hold a longer, higher-capacity magazine. The P228 and later the P229 were built as compact versions of the same design, with a shorter grip frame and shorter magazine. Because the grip panels follow the frame, a P226 panel is too long for a P229, and a P229 panel leaves a gap on a P226.
The P228 and P229 are a different story. The P229 replaced the P228 and kept the same grip frame dimensions, which is why grip makers sell one set labelled "P228 / P229".
E2, Legion and Carry models
- E2 frames come with a one-piece wrap-around grip instead of two separate panels. Some E2 frames can be converted to standard two-piece grips with grip screws, but it depends on the frame. Send us a photo before ordering.
- Legion pistols have a modified frame, and standard P226 or P229 grips may not fit without changes.
- P229 Carry models use a different frame from the standard P229, so standard P229 grips are not a match.
How to tell which Sig you have
- Read the slide or frame. The model number (P226, P228, P229) is stamped on the left side of the slide.
- Look at the grip. If you have one wrap-around grip with no screws on the sides, you probably have an E2 frame.
- Measure if you are unsure. The P226 grip is noticeably taller than the P229 grip. A quick photo next to a ruler is enough for us to confirm.
Grip screws
The P226 and P229 use the same grip screws. Our P226 / P229 grip screw set comes in black, stainless steel and gold. Our grips install with your original screws, which are not included with the grips.
Choosing your Sig grips
Every set is cut from Turkish walnut or acrylic, CNC machined for the exact frame and finished by hand in our workshop in Türkiye. You can choose between classic checkering, engraved designs, Sig-style oval logos and skull medallions. If you want your name, initials or a logo, our custom engraved grips are made for both the P226 and the P229.
