Colt Python Grips Guide: Classic vs New Python, Wood Grips and Fit

Colt Python walnut grips with fish scale pattern and brass logo

The Colt Python is one of the most admired revolvers ever made, and a good set of wood grips is part of its character. Whether you own a classic Python from the 1950s–2000s or one of the new Pythons Colt has made since 2020, this guide explains your grip options and how to make sure a new set fits.

Classic Python vs new Python

  • Classic Python (1955–2005): Colt introduced the Python in 1955 and built it until the mid-2000s. These revolvers came with checkered walnut grips and a serrated backstrap.
  • New Python (2020 onwards): Colt brought the Python back in 2020 in stainless steel. Gun Tests found that the new guns closely follow the original dimensions and contours. The factory grips on the new Python are thinner, laminated wood, and the backstrap is no longer serrated.

Because Colt changed some details over the years, we always recommend confirming the fit for your revolver. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and tell us whether you have a classic or a new Python.

Target grips vs service grips

Python grips come in two main shapes:

  • Service grips are slim and follow the shape of the frame. They are good for carrying and for smaller hands.
  • Target grips are fuller, cover more of the backstrap and often have finger grooves. They give a firmer hold and help with recoil from full-power .357 Magnum loads.

The thin factory grips on the new Python are a common reason owners look for an upgrade: a fuller wood grip makes heavy loads more comfortable to shoot.

Our Colt Python grips

Our Colt Python wood grips are target-style grips with finger grooves, cut from Turkish walnut and finished by hand. You can choose between three designs:

  • Fish scale with brass logo: fish scale pattern with an inlaid solid brass medallion
  • Laser checkered: fine checkering on dark-grained walnut, no logo
  • Checkered with brass logo: diamond checkering with an inlaid solid brass medallion

Each set is CNC machined for the Python frame and installs with your original grip screw. If you want your name or initials on the grips, see our custom engraved grips.

Caring for walnut grips

  • Wipe the grips with a soft, dry cloth after shooting.
  • Avoid solvents and gun oil on the wood when you clean the revolver.
  • Apply a few drops of wood oil once or twice a year to keep the finish looking fresh.

No. The grips install with your original Python grip screw.
